The town of Walpole was incorporated in 1756 and named in honor of Sir Robert Walpole, a British statesman.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.7 square miles, of which 35.2 square miles is land and 1.5 square miles is water, comprising 4.16% of the town.
